Crosstown Commons (Corpus Christi)
Crosstown Commons, a proposed outdoor mall on the west side of Corpus Christi, Texas would bring in new stores and attract out-of-town shoppers to Corpus Christi in a 227-acre retail center. CBL & Associates hope to create a regional retail destination. CBL & Associates is a Tennessee-based development company. The mall would be developed near Holly Road and Greenwood Drive and would consist of several major retail stores and restaurants linked by pedestrian walkways and include a commons area for gathering.
It would be similar in design to The Shops at La Cantera in San Antonio, which features high-end retail stores in an open-air, walkable center. The development group is planning a similar mall for Pearland, south of Houston, which will include a hotel and residential and office space.
On October 23, 2007, the Corpus Christi City Council voted 6-3 to approve up to $40 million in tax rebates for Crosstown Commons. Mayor Henry Garrett, Melody Cooper, Bill Kelly, Priscilla Leal, John Marez and Nelda Martinez voted in favor and Larry Elizondo, Mike Hummell and Mike McCutchon opposed. Ground breaking for Crosstown Commons could begin in 2008 and the project, which will be completed in stages, could take upwards of 8 years to complete.
