Clearance gauge

Clearance Gauge is product from Quality by Vision that measures the distance between a roll and a chuck on a can seamer used to form a double seam in a can - sealing the the lid (End) to the can body such as in paint, beverage or food cans. The lid (End) should be of metal while the body can be of metal (beverage, soup, etc.), paper (whiskey cans) or plastic.

The Clearance Gauge product offers an alternate to the more common feeler gauge technique for ensuring that the roll and chuck are in their correct respective positions.

The Clearance Gauge is inserted into a double seamer head and is able to provide real time information AbOUT the relative position of the roll and the chuck, allowing the operator to adjust their position without actually having to try the results out on actual cans.

Many companies use feeler gauges, small pieces of metal, to check for a go/no-go spacing between the roll and chuck. Adjustments using feeler gauges require both experience in correcting mistakes and time. Companies utilize final product testing, which may miss the springback effect. The springback effect occurs in a seam that was closed too tightly; the seam then springs back and may open up after a delay, causing the seam to appear too loose.

Applications

Some common applications of can seamers include, but are not limited to:

  • Beverage Cans
  • Aerosol Cans
  • Food cans
  • Automotive Filters (oil and fuel)
  • Capacitors
  • Certain Automotive Mufflers (Silencers)
  • Drums
