Introduction to Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of substances. You learn AbOUT the structure and property of substances. All chemicals are substances. A chemical reaction is when substances change and when new substances form. Chemistry turns raw material into useful products such as coal, crude oil, natural gas, metal ores, minerals, air and water. Chemistry is an important study in this material world.
Experiments in Chemistry
Experiments are done by scientists to learn more about chemicals. Apparatus is the equipment used in experiments. To measure volumes of liquids cylinders, burettes, pipettes, and droppers are used. Safety rules are very important when doing experiments. The main stages in chemistry experiments are: aim, method, results and conclusions.
Chemical and Physical Change
New substance(s) are made in Chemical reactions. Precipitation is when solids are formed from solutions, effervescence is when a reaction gives gas, an exothermic reaction is when heat is given and an endothermic reaction is when heat is taken in. Physical reactions often change the state of matter. Physical reactions are normally easy to reverse.
Particles and the States of Matter
Solid, liquid and gas are the states of matter. Melting, freezing, evaporation, boiling and condensation are the main ways matter changes. Changes occur at the melting or freezing point of that substance. Everything is made of particles with spaces between them. Solids have closely packed particles that vibrate. Particles of liquid are close together but have space to move and particles in gas are far apart and move in many directions. Atoms are the simplest particles. A molecule is made up of a group of atoms.
Explaining Physical Change
The state of a substance is formed by the temperature or the movement of the particles. The temperature increases of a substance increases when the substance has more energy and the particles move quickly. Sublimation is when a solid turns straight to a gas, or vice versa. Diffusion is when the particles of 2 different substances mix.
