Charles MacCarthy (artist)

Charles MacCarthy was born in 1950 and educated at the Dragon School, Oxford and Westminster School, London. Half French on his mother’s side, he comes from a family of painters and sculptors (Geoffroy-Dechaume) and is a descendent of Charles and Molly MacCarthy the noted Bloomsbury writers and critics. His sister Sophie MacCarthy is an outstanding potter whose works are highly colourful and decorative.

After having studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts at Brighton Polytechnic, he went on to teach art in a secondary school. His first solo exhibition was held at The Borlase Gallery, Blewbury in 1978, and since then he has exhibited widely in London, Herefordshire and Shropshire. His works have been included in numerous group shows and he has shown widely at a number of Contemporary and Modern British artfairs. Currently he shows at the Galanthus Gallery Hereford and the Silk Top Hat Gallery Ludlow.

His work which continues to develop owes much to his interest in 20th century Italian art ( particularly Morandi ) and in general the majority of his pictures are still lives. He paints mainly in oils and each work often takes many years before it is completed. Most recent paintings ( exhibited Spring 2007 ) show influence of Bloomsbury artists particularly Duncan Grant. He exhibits with the Piers Feetham Gallery in London.
