Centre for Advancing Journalism

The Centre for Advancing Journalism is a graduate teaching and research centre in the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne.
History
The Centre was founded in 2009 as the Centre for Advanced Journalism. Michael Gawenda was appointed as inaugural director.
In 2011 academic and author Margaret Simons was took over director and gave the Centre its current name. She remained in this role until July 2017.
Each year the Centre runs New News, a two-day festival discussing current issues in journalism. Since 2014 it has run in partnership with the Wheeler Centre. Previous speakers have included Ross Gittins Chris Kenny, Jim Middleton and Wendy Bacon.
The A. N. Smith Lecture, named for the founder of the Australian Journalists Association, has been delivered at the Centre since 2009. Previous speakers include editor in chief of The Guardian Katharine Viner, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism Emily Bell, managing director of the ABC Mark Scott and Fairfax Media CEO Greg Hywood.
Academic programs
The Centre co-ordinates the teaching of the Master of Journalism, a coursework degree with focus on professional practice, law and ethics, media entrepreneurship and placement for internships. A graduate diploma and certificate in journalism are also offered.
Students contribute to The Citizen, an online publication edited by investigative journalist Jo Chandler. Student reports have been recognised with awards from the Melbourne Press Club and the Walkley Foundation.
The Centre operates an exchange program with the Fudan Journalism School, Fudan University, China.
Research
Research at the Centre for Advancing Journalism focuses on innovation and interventions into media practice. Past projects have assessed the civic impact of journalism, media reporting of violence against women, and the coverage of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.
In 2015 the Centre undertook research into the Australian public's attitudes towards asylum seekers and refugees in partnership with the Melbourne Social Equity Institute.
