Carlos Antúnez
Carlos Antúnez González (30 December 1847 – 27 October 1897) was a Chilean politician and landowner who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, as a senator for Colchagua Province, and as a minister of state. He was also president of the Senate from July to October 1887.
He served as Minister of War and Navy under President Domingo Santa María and twice as Minister of the Interior, under presidents José Manuel Balmaceda and Federico Errázuriz Echaurren.
Early life
Antúnez was born in Santiago on 30 December 1847 to Nemesio Antúnez Garfias and Eduvigis González Ibieta. He studied at Colegio San Ignacio from 1856 to 1858 and at the Conciliar Seminary from 1859 to 1862, graduating with a bachelor's degree in humanities.
He later continued his education in France and England under the supervision of Mariano Casanova, where he became acquainted with developments in agricultural technology. After returning to Chile, he introduced some of these techniques at his estate in Quechereguas.
In October 1868, Antúnez married Laura Cazotte Alcalde in Valparaíso. They had one son.
Political career
A member of the Liberal Party, Antúnez began his political career in Lontué, where he served as a municipal councillor and mayor in 1873. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Lontué for the 1879–1882 legislative term.
From 1881 to 1884, Antúnez served as intendant of Talca Province. During his administration, municipal buildings, a prison and a hospital were constructed, while the city's market was replaced and improvements were made to bridges and streets. His administration also introduced an urban railway and promoted the establishment of agricultural and charitable institutions in Talca.
President Domingo Santa María appointed Antúnez Minister of War and Navy on 21 May 1884, a position he held until 6 February 1885. He subsequently served as acting Minister of the Interior from 10 to 22 October 1885.
In 1885, Antúnez was elected senator for Colchagua Province for the 1885–1891 term. He served as president of the Senate of Chile from 1 July to 14 October 1887.
Under President José Manuel Balmaceda, Antúnez served as Minister of the Interior from 30 November 1886 to 28 June 1887. In December 1887, he left the Senate after accepting a diplomatic appointment as Chilean minister plenipotentiary to France and the United Kingdom, a position he held until 1891.
Antúnez returned to Chile around the time of the 1891 Chilean Civil War and subsequently withdrew from public life for several years, devoting himself to his agricultural property in Lontué. He returned to government during the presidency of Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, serving as Minister of the Interior from 20 November 1896 to 26 June 1897.
During this final period in government, he also briefly served as acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Colonization on 20 November 1896 and as acting Minister of Industry and Public Works from 19 to 21 April 1897.
