Carlo Ricci

Carlo Ricci is a child advocate, writer, and academic. Carlo Ricci plays a key role as liaison officer and post-secondary admissions project representative for The Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents . Carlo Ricci is the founder and editor of The Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning, an internationally recognized peer-reviewed journal.
Carlo Ricci was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1968. Carlo Ricci earned a PhD in Cultural Studies and Social Justice from OISE/UT and has taught everything from kindergarten to graduate school. Carlo Ricci has written 3 books, published over 15 peer-reviewed and over 30 non-peer-reviewed articles, and has been invited to speak on topics including the advantage of unschooling, democratic education, freeschooling, and democratic child rearing practices in over 12 countries around the world. He has taught for the University of Toronto, Brock University, and currently teaches in the Graduate Studies division of the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University .
Teaching Practice
In his writing he shares how he incorporates the principles of unschooling and democratic education. He is a child advocate who champions unschooling (also known as natural learning or life learning) and learner centered democratic education. In a book he co-edited with Jerry Mintz titled Turning Point he states that "children are among the last acceptably oppressed group" and that this shameful fact needs to end. "In 1892 the Criminal Code allowed corrective force against wives, employees, prisoners and children". Fortunately, corrective force against wives, employees and prisoners is no longer acceptable; unfortunately, in 2004 by a margin of 6-3 the court upheld what is known as the “spanking law” against children . In his writing he argues that our child rearing practices are hurting our children and that there are alternatives. He believes that we cannot treat children in non-democratic ways and then expect that as adults they will live their lives according to authentic democratic ways . He believes that making a difference in the world is easy and we can all make a difference by changing how we interact with those around us—by transforming our lives and how we act around young people we transform the world. If we want a better future, the best way to get there is by rethinking our child rearing practices. We can all play a role and if enough of us do, the change will be noticeable<ref name="turning" />.
Publications and Research
Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning (JUAL) seeks to bring together an international community of scholars exploring the topic of unschooling and alternative learning, which espouses learner centered democratic approaches to learning. JUAL is also a space to reveal the limitations of mainstream schooling.

JUAL understands learner centered democratic education as individuals deciding their own curriculum, and participating in the governance of their school-if they are in one. Some examples of learner centered democratic possibilities are unschooling, Sudbury Valley , Fairhaven , the Albany Free School , and the Beach School in Toronto . In terms of unschooling, we view it as a self-directed approach to learning outside of the mainstream education.
YouTube Unschooling Channel is an attempt to continue to spread the learner centered democratic approach to education and child rearing with a broader audience.
