Capital Challenge Walk MS

New article name is the National MS Society, National Capital Chapter’s two-day, 50-kilometer walk that takes participants through the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, finishing at the U.S. Capitol. Part of the National MS Society’s series of Challenge Walks across the country, the event serves to raise money for the research, programs, and other services supported by the National MS Society.

Participants

Several hundred walkers participate each year in the annual event. Each walker pays a registration fee and commits to a fundraising minimum to benefit the National MS Society. The 2009 Capital Challenge Walk MS raised half a million dollars for the National MS Society’s programs and initiatives. Participants are fully supported in the lead up to and throughout the weekend with training walks and fundraising tips prior to the event, as well as rest stops and an overnight site for participants during the weekend.

Teams

An official team is a group of four or more walkers, each of who commit to meeting the fundraising minimum. Team members may be walkers, Super Crew members, or virtual participants. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, teams have more fun and raise more money. Teams, especially team captains, receive extra support and materials in reaching their fundraising goals and preparing for the walk.

Volunteers

Volunteers are a key component of Capital Challenge Walk MS. Volunteers have many opportunities to donate their time over the course of the weekend. They may volunteer a few hours, or they may serve as Crew members who work and travel both days of the event, helping with tasks throughout the weekend. Super Crew members volunteer the entire weekend and meet the fundraising minimum, just like the walkers.
