Calhoun Community High School
Calhoun Community High School first began as an alternative school inside of Lakeview High School. Eventually they were treated as less than students by the teachers, administrators and students of Lakeview High School. After a few years they decided that they would break out on there own. They rented part of a church in the lakeview district where they held class. The part of the building was a basketball court with rooms on each wall that were used as classrooms. They had a staff of dignified teachers as well as a very ingenious principal. After 4 years in that building they moved to what used to be an old elementary school building on the city's south-side where they are currently still at.
Gang Influence Many students in the school socialize or are a part of a gang. Many of them are from the North Side, The Northeast Side, The East side and the South Side of the city. The East side controls most territory branching out and making allies of the Northeast and South sides. Many are involved in the movement of illegal contraband and violence across the city.
Diversity Although the number of students happens to be quite small the diversity among race is higher than any other school in the area. In this environment people learn to know other races and cultures that many outside of the school would not have the chance to know. It helps to unite the city and the young people attending.
