C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons
C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons is a 140 year old jewelry company in India. It was founded in 1869 by Cotha Krishniah Chetty. Krishniah Chetty initially started by simply sourcing gems and gold, but from 1880 moved on to jewelry as well. The establishment relocated to larger premises as the jewelry designs found patronage in the Royal families of Mysore, Sandur and Travancore. Krishniah Chetty’s clientele mostly included the royal families and the British, who were then very much a part of India’s colonial landscape.
C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons designed the official seal of Mysore State (now Karnataka). It was also awarded the Hallmark certification for gold; in fact it was the first company in Karnataka to receive this award.

Diamonds
Diamonds are extensively used in jewelry making because of their remarkable optical characteristics. Due to the extreme rigidity of its framework, which is similar to that of a tightly woven lattice, only few impurities can contaminate it. This results in the clear and colorless appearance of natural diamonds.
Diamonds are colored when impurities such as boron and nitrogen get into the lattice framework. These impurities color the diamonds in myriad hues such as blue, pink, red, green, orange, purple, violet, yellow, olive, and brown. C. Krishniah Chety & Sons specializes in both clear and colored natural diamonds.
Jewelers shape the diamonds in different ‘cuts’ to create jewelry. There are 9 popular cuts: the Round Brilliant cut, the Marquise cut, the Princess cut, the Radiant cut, the Emerald cut, the Pear cut, the Asscher cut, the Oval cut and the Heart cut.
The quality or grade of a diamond is determined by the 4 C’s - Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat.
The Diamond Certificate
The Gemological Institute of America prescribes certain standards for the quality of diamonds. C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons uses it as a guideline to certify their “Ultimate Collection” of diamonds.
Customers are provided with a diamond certificate for all diamonds over 0.23 carat weight. The diamond certificate records all the relevant information pertaining to the diamond including carat weight, color grade, measurements and physical properties as well as plotting diagrams.
