Burhaan Kinu
Burhaan Kinu (born 24 April 1986) is a Kashmiri photojournalist from Indian-controlled Kashmir. He presently works as a staff photojournalist for the most popular and largely circulated daily newspaper of India, Hindustan Times and he is currently based in New Delhi, India. In 2013, his photograph of Holi celebration was judged by Huffington Post among the 52 most breathtaking photos from around the world.In 2010 Burhaan got trapped in an exchange of gunfire between Indian Armed Forces and Militia in Srinagar and he had a narrow escape while covering that gun battle.
Life and work
Burhaan was born in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. He has been covering one of the most contentious spaces in the world today, the conflicted spaces of Jammu & Kashmir region through his lenses. His photography has captured the conflicts of the region as well as the unique and beautiful cultures of the province. In 2011 he left job with Kashmir Observer in Srinagar before joining Hindustan Times on a staff position in New Delhi in 2012.
Career
Kinu worked for local daily newspapers and news magazines in Kashmir since 2006 before moving to India's capital New Delhi in 2012. Recently, he was interviewed by faculty in Brown University for his coverage on Summer 2010 Kashmir uprising. He has also covered the conflicted spaces in Northeast India, the conflict between Rengma Naga and Karbi tribes, and Mizo and Bru, refugee camps in Nagaland and Assam. His photos have been discussed and exhibited at the South Asia conference, University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2014. His work has published worldwide including renowned international news organisations like TIME The Los Angeles Times, BBC, Aljazeera, Getty Images, ABC News, Huffington Post, Bloomberg, The Denver Channel, CNBC, Corbis and Demotix. In 2012, he was also selected as the cover photographer of an academic literary journal Cerebration.org which is jointly published from New Jersey and India.
Significant Projects
Some of the most important assignments Burhaan has done are covering the refugee camps and tribal conflict in Northeast India, Kashmir conflict, the aftermath of 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, 2014 Badaun gang [...] allegations, May 2015 Nepal earthquake amongst others. Burhaan Kinu covers very varied issues and topics and his work not only is diverse, but it also dedicated to bring out the focus on human rights and an ethicality of vision.
