Brookhaven Hospital
Brookhaven Hospital is an establishment in the Silent Hill survival horror video games and the 2006 film, which is primarily run as a mental institution. According to the official website, it was built in the 1600s to aid the victims of an epidemic, and is the oldest surviving structure in modern Silent Hill. After a plague epidemic and the abandonment of the town, it was repopulated in the 1860s as a penal colony, and Brookhaven Hospital and Toluca Prison were founded as the American Civil War broke out. In recent years, the hospital has been used primarily as a mental institution, as well as a clinic. The hospital has 5 floors, including a basement and a roof top.
Appearances
Silent Hill 2
James Sunderland is lured to the hospital in an attempt to catch the prankster Laura, in the fear that she might be hurt by a creature. When James finds Laura, she tricks him into being locked in a room full of creatures that she is not aware of. The hospital also has an "Otherside", which looks largely the same but is even more dilapidated. When James is transported to the Otherside following the fight with the Hanging Men, he emerges in the hospital "garden", which according to the map should be a quarter of an acre long. But here it is just a grassy enclosure surrounded by insurmountable walls, with hardly any room to move. Re-entering the hospital, pipes and walls are smeared with blood, and doors and furniture are wrapped in white sheets, suggesting a mass quarantine (a nod to the plague that ravaged the town). More symbolically, the sheets resemble those a coroner would drape over a dead body.
Silent Hill 3
Heather Mason enters the hospital in the hope of finding a man named Leonard, as suggested by the priest Vincent. The hospital looks largely the same as in the previous game. Heather is psychologically tormented by a patient who is obsessed with her. He writes her notes in his diary and leaves a token of a doll. When the hospital crosses over into the "other world", it retains its traditional look: blood-red, rust coloured surrounds; wire mesh floors and walls.
