Brazil–Portugal football rivalry
The Brazil–Portugal football rivalry or Seleçao's Derby is important because of the background of both countries, as Brazilian culture is same as Portuguese. Although they rarely play each other due to Brazil and Portugal being on different confederations CONMEBOL and UEFA respectively. The last competitive match between the two sides was in 2010 FIFA World Cup group stage, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
History
Although this rivalry isn't as old as compared to other rivalries as it started in 1956, but it has a significant effect of Kingdom of Portugal which ruled the Colonial Brazil from early 18th century to early 19th century.
Major Tournaments
1966 World Cup
First ever competitive match between both sides was in 1966 FIFA World Cup, when Portugal and Brazil were drafted in Group 3 along with Hungary and Bulgaria. The Portuguese side took lead in 15th minute with a goal from Simões, just 12 minutes later Eusébio doubled the lead for the European side. Within the last 17 minutes remaining Brazil reduced goal deficit to one goal as Rildo scored in 73rd minutes, but that did not last long as Eusébio got his brace as he scored again in the 85th minute.
2010 World Cup
Both teams face-off once again in the biggest football competition, both sides were drawn in the same group just like the last time in 1966 World Cup. The game started with Brazil missing their star player Kaká who was suspended due to red card he received in the previous match against Ivory Coast. The game ended 0-0 draw with both the sides qualifying for the knock-out phase.
