Borgen Project

The Borgen Project is a nonprofit organization (NPO) based in Seattle, Washington that works with American political leaders to pass legislation that will help achieve the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals designed to alleviate global poverty.

Background

Founded in 2003, The Borgen Project focuses on meeting with United States Senators and United States Representatives to secure their support on anti-poverty legislation in US Congress. The majority of The Borgen Project's efforts are centered on advocacy and lobbying, including educating the public on the issues associated with global poverty and mobilizing them to take political action.

In 2007, The Borgen Project worked with then Senator Barack Obama on the Global Poverty Act, a bill requiring the White House to develop a strategy for providing assistance to foreign countries to promote food security, to stimulate rural economies, to improve emergency response to food crises, and to amend the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.

In 2009, The Borgen Project endorsed the Richard Lugar-Robert Casey Food Security Bill, also known as Global Food Security Act of 2009, and the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act of 2009.
