Beloved (novel) characters

As a note, all characters are listed alphabetically using their first name. The only exceptions are white upper class members- the Bodwins, Mr. Buddy, and the Garners- who are listed using their last name.

  • Amy Denver (aka Whitegirl)- Indenture white on her way to Boston to find velvet who helps Sethe on her travels toward Ohio to Baby Suggs' house. Denver is named after her since Amy helped Sethe during her delivery.

  • Baby Suggs- Sethe's mother-in-law. Her freedom is bought by her son, Halle Suggs, and her house is the refuge Sethe seeks to escape Sweet Home.
  • Beloved- The child Sethe murders when Schoolteacher comes to take them back to Sweet Home. She haunts I24, then physically returns to seek revenge on Sethe.
  • Buglar- Sethe's second son who runs away from home with his brother Howard.
  • Mr. Buddy- The owner Amy Denver runs away from whom she admits beats her.
  • Mr. Edward Bodwin- White abolitionist who petitions against Sethe being hung as punishment for her act of [...]. He's also known for finding jobs for Baby Suggs, Sethe, and Denver.
  • Ms. Bodwin- Edward's sister who is also an avid abolitionist.

  • Denver- Sethe's only child still living with her.

  • Ella- Part of the Underground Railroad who helped Sethe get to Baby Sugg's house once she got across the Ohio River. She was also the leader of the exorcism against Beloved.

  • Mr. Garner- Original owner of the Sweet Home men. He is known for treating his slaves as men, and gives them freedom to work however they like on his farm.
  • Mrs. Lillian Garner- Wife of Mr. Garner who is ill during the rememory of Sweet Home. Like her husband, she is very sympathetic toward her slaves.

  • Halle Suggs- Sethe's husband, and one of the Sweet Home men. Baby Sugg's son who purchases her freedom. He is believed to have died the day of Denver's birth, although it is never proven.
  • Here Boy- Denver and Sethe's dog at I24. Disappears when Beloved arrives, and reappears once she is gone.
  • Hi Man- The leader of Paul D's chain gang during his imprisonment in Alfred, Georgia.
  • Howard- Sethe's oldest child who runs away from home with his brother Buglar.

  • Janey Wagon- Employed by the Bodwin siblings. Encourages the Bodwins to give Denver work at their house.
  • Jenny Whitlow- The name on Baby Sugg's bill of sale before she changes it reflect her husband's name.
  • Joshua- Stamp Paid's given name before he changed it.

  • Lady Jones- Educated black woman in the community who teaches the town children how to read and write. She is the first person Denver visits when she needs food and money to sustain her family.

  • Ma'am- Sethe's mother who is hung when Sethe was still a child.
  • 'Mister' the Rooster- Rooster at Sweet Home who Paul D claims looks at him with more humanity than Schoolteacher or his nephews.

  • Nan- The slave woman who takes care of Sethe as a child.
  • Nelson Lord- One of Denver's peers at Lady Jones' school.

  • Patsy the Thirty Mile Woman- Sixo's lover who lives 30 miles away from Sweet Home. During Sixo and Paul D's escape from Sweet Home, she is pregnant with Sixo's child.
  • Paul A Garner- A Sweet Home man, and brother of the other Pauls. He is killed during his escape from Sweet Home.
  • Paul D Garner- One of the Sweet Home men who comes looking for Sethe. Sethe and him start a relationship together, and begin encountering rememories from Sweet Home.
  • Paul F Garner- A Sweet Home man, and brother of the other Pauls. He is sold directly after Mr. Garner's death in order to pay some of Sweet Home's debts.

  • Reverend Pike- A pastor in Ohio who attempts to help Baby Suggs locate her other seven children by writing letters to their previous owners.

  • Sawyer- The owner of the restaurant where Sethe works.
  • Schoolteacher- Mr. Garner's replacement at Sweet Home. Instigates a new power regime at Sweet Home that included beatings, punishment, and molesting.
  • Schoolteacher's nephews- Responsible for stealing Sethe's milk while she was pregnant, and being schoolteacher's students at Sweet Home.
  • SHERIFF- Part of the Schoolteacher's entourage when he comes to reclaim Sethe and her children. He is also the one who brings Sethe to jail after she slaughters Beloved.
  • Sethe- Main character of the novel. She is haunted by the guilt of [...] Beloved, but is shameless in her decision. At the end of the novel, she learns to accept her history at Sweet Home and learns to claim responsibility for herself.
  • Seveno- Sixo's baby with the Thirty Mile Woman.
  • Sixo- One of the Sweet Home men. He is put over a spit, and shot after being caught trying to run away.
  • Stamp Paid (aka Joshua)- The riverman who helps Sethe's cross the Ohio River, one of Baby Suggs' friends, and the one who shows Paul D Sethe's newspaper clipping.

  • Vashti- Stamp Paid's wife who has an affair with their owner. Stamp states she died at a young age.
