BaseN

From an idea to a vision…followed by action. Established in Finland in 2001, BaseN (pronounced "base N") has developed a complete suite of network monitoring and reporting services for the enterprise market to give customers full awareness and ability to pinpoint and resolve bottlenecks, outages, and third party errors.

The company was founded by Pasi Hurri, the President & CEO, who has 15 years of networking experience. His previous job was with KPNQwest, the Pan-European data communications provider.

The firm is also backed by Internet and network-savvy figures: One of the largest private shareholders in BaseN is Johan 'Julf' Helsingius, an IP visionary and Internet pioneer, who started one of Europe's first ISPs, EUnet, back in 1992 and was the first person to take the Internet to Russia. In November 2002 the company opened its European operational hub in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 2005, BaseN established BaseN North America Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. For the company this is just the beginning, where and when BaseN will establish operations to facilitate customer’s needs remains to be seen, but Hurri and his team are constantly on the look-out, monitoring trends and situations.

Today’s data communications market is characterized by short term solutions, fluctuating outsourcing trends, lack of end-to-end visibility and a missing verified baseline for Enterprise IT and communications. Outsourcing organizations and Service Providers are suffering from an inherent lack of back-office automation and are spending most of their time ‘catching up’ rather than servicing customer needs proactively.

BaseN provides linearly scalable measurement solutions based on grid computing. The BaseN Platform is deployed mainly for network measurement and management but has also been used for monitoring other devices, such as vehicles, drink vending machines and weather stations.

The mission of the company is to provide network, application, service, and system insight across protocols and technologies for Service Providers and Enterprises to boost business communication performance and industrial data analysis capabilities.

The next-generation distributed monitoring, reporting and data analysis platform is continuously developed by BaseN to map customer communications challenges to easily understandable actions to restore, improve, optimize and future proof all infrastructure elements independent of vendor or technology.

BaseN is a proactive company with a constant and keen interest in developing and growing. The company thrives on its commitment to offer the latest technological research and development to its current portfolio of customers and future potential ones. One area of intense focus is to become the new market leader with [...] edge innovations for businesses with more profound consequences and results.

BaseN Platform

BaseN Platform is the service platform developed by BaseN. It uses small agents within the customer's wide area network. These act as data collectors on all designated devices. The BaseN Platform continuously polls data from all routers, switches and network-centric servers, using most available standard (or open) protocols, and then processes them into a customer-friendly graphic interface. The Survey, Optimize, Track (SOT) cycle used by the firm makes data sharing a manageable piece of the customer's business. Once the diagnostic process is complete and the core problem is resolved, rapid-response measures can be installed. In the case of a network outage it only takes a few seconds before SMS, email and even MMS messages reach the people responsible (either network owners, third party providers, or the customer's designated executives) with a full fault report and proper actions for response.

BaseN Energy Awareness Technologies (BEAT) is a technology that increases energy awareness among consumers and drives large scale energy saving across societies. By making real-time energy consumption data available to each individual consumer, they become aware of their consumption and are encouraged to save energy. The BEAT solution can be rolled out to millions of households and make detailed energy consumption data available on a large scale. It is a fast and cost-effective service for conducting large scale real-time electricity measurements. This ultimately provides the consumer with the opportunity to directly compare the energy efficiency of electrical devices at home and adjust their energy consumption behavior.

The BaseN Platform is a SaaS level 4 -type solution, capable of integrating with all kind of devices and sensors. Examples include: weather stations, video/security cameras, a wide range of sensors for temperature, vibration, humidity, etc., environmental probes, vehicles, vending automats etc.

Awards

In 2005, BaseN received the Deloitte "Rising Star" award for being the fastest growing Finnish technology company within three years.
