Avi Degani

Avi Degani is an Israeli geographer and geographic information scientist. He founded a research and planning company, Geocartography Knowledge Group, headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is an authority on political polling and changes in polling due to the use of the internet.

Personal

Raised and educated in Israel, he received his BSc in Geography, Geology, and Climatology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and PhD in Geography from the University of Minnesota. Degani’s dissertation focused on building a computerized atlas (1971) under the tutelage of John R. Borchert.

Career

He worked in the Department of Geography and the Human Environment at Tel Aviv University, publishing on geographical topics and Geographic information Science. He developed one of the first examples of three-dimensional automated mapping and derivation of attribute and statistical surfaces from these spatial data.
