:* – Merano train derailment: at 09:05 local time (07:05 UTC), a 2-car Stadler GTW train, operated by STA Südtiroler, derails after running into a landslide between Latsch and Kastelbell, near Merano, in Kastelbell-Tschars, Italy, causing nine deaths and injuring 28.

:* – A Rovos Rail luxury tourist train derails near Pretoria, South Africa. At least two people are killed and many more are injured. The owner of Rovos Rail said that the train’s nineteen carriages were unhooked from the locomotive when they freewheeled out of control. Half of the 55 passengers were on board along with some of the thirty staff. The dead include a woman and her baby, born moments after the derailment. See also: 2010 Pretoria runaway

:* – The newly constructed Fuxia Railway, connecting Fuzhou and Xiamen, opens in China. The long line is part of the high-speed railway system connecting Shenzhen to Shanghai, and will see trains traveling up to . The new line reduces travel time between Fuzhou and Xiamen from 11 hours to as little as 90 minutes.
