American Free Journal
The American Free Journal is a free, independent alternative weekly newspaper serving communities in eastern San Bernadino County, California. The Desert Valley Star is a sister publication that shares editorial content, but publishes advertising targeted at the Coachella Valley community.
Publication details
The two papers are published by Praxis Communications, Inc. every Thursday. Distribution is to strategic locations throughout the respective service areas, including all public libraries and city halls, plus a wide variety of retail stores, restaurants and civic centers by use of wire racks, metal distribution boxes and on-counter placement. The weekly is also available online. The American Free Journal has been publishing for 21 years.
Staff
The executive editor and publisher is Dean Gray who credits the influence of Art Kunkin's Los Angeles Free Press and Paul Krassner's The Realist as inspiration. Kunkin is now a columnist for the American Free Journal, publishing a column entitled "Living Longer" that focuses on life extension. Current editors are Morgan Craft and Sandra Schulman.
Desert Valley Star
The Desert Valley Star is the only independent alternative weekly in the Coachella Valley on the east end of Riverside County in California. The weekly is published by Praxis Communications, Inc. every Thursday. Distribution is to over 500 locations including all public libraries, city halls, plus a wide variety of retail stores, restaurants and civic centers by use of wire racks, metal distribution boxes and on counter placement. The Newspaper publishes entertainment and information of arts, music, and community news to over 20,000 readers. In addition to printing a paper product they maintain an Internet site at http://www.desetvalleystar.com with a virtual page flipping reader supported by MyGazines.
The Desert Valley Star serves the cities and communities of Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Thousand Palms, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Sky Valley. The offices are in Desert Hot Springs and it is the only adjudicated newspaper located and published in the city of Desert Hot Springs.
The sister publication, American Free Journal, shares content and serves the high desert communities of eastern San Bernardino County including Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and 29 Palms. The Desert Valley Star obtained adjudication as a newspaper of general circulation by order of Riverside Superior Court in 2009 giving the newspaper the responsibility to publish public notices (also known as legal ads) The newspaper is also sometimes referred to as The Desert Star Weekly, The Star Weekly, The Desert Valley Star Weekly, and The Weekly. The Desert Valley Star began publication in 2008.
