Amalgamates
The Amalgamates, founded in 1984, are Tufts University's premier coed collegiate a cappella group.
Like most college a cappella groups, the "'Mates" arrange and learn a new repertoire of rock, pop, R&B, alternative, and jazz covers every semester. They perform at Tufts as well as other universities throughout the school year, and during Spring Break go on organized concert tours throughout the world, performing at various venues including colleges, high schools and a cappella festivals. The Mates also help promote MusicAL education by leading a cappella workshops.
The Amalgamates of Tufts University was founded in 1984 by Joanne Cohen, Craig Everett, and David Wiley. The trio held auditions in November of 1984 and thirty people auditioned for the ten remaining spots. The Mates first official college performance was at Wellesley College, followed soon thereafter by their first home concert at Goddard Chapel with the other two groups at Tufts.
They have recorded 10 albums, seven of which have landed songs on Varsity Vocals' Best of College A Cappella compilation series, making them one of the most frequent contributors to the BOCA line. The albums have also garnered many other accolades including several Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs) from the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA).
