Alexandre Dumond

Alexandre Dumond is a student-athlete from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He currently competes in the sport of biathlon at the national and international level and was a member of Team Canada's biathlon contingent at the 2009 World University Games (Winter Universiade) in Harbin, China. He is currently pursuing a BSc (Honors) in Kinesiology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

After joining 51 Canada Aviation Museum Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron he began training the unit's biathlon team under coach Cpt. Michel Brown. It wasn't until a year later, at the age of 13, that he competed in his first event. He won a bronze medal in the Junior category and a bronze medal in the relay with teammates Nick Fysh and Marty Hart at the regional competition in Chelsea, Quebec. His performances on the Cadet circuit were not as impressive the following year, in 2004, and he didn't claim any podium spots. He gained more experience the following year competing on the high school Nordic skiing circuit for Colonel By Secondary School and was able to qualify for the Provincial Cadet Championships.

Alexandre's high performance career started in the summer of 2005 when he claimed a spot on the Team Ontario Canada Winter Games Development Squad under coaches Jamie Kallio and Dan Mallett. He joined Chelsea Nordiq, the local biathlon club, and continued to compete for Colonel By Secondary School under coach Mark Rab. In the winter of 2006 he competed on the Québec Cup circuit as well as both Cadet and Canadian national championships. He continued to develop his skills over the summer and fall of 2006 and in early 2007 secured a spot on Team Ontario's Canada Winter Games biathlon team. That winter he competed at the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon, at Canadian Championships in Charlo, New Brunswick, and, in an effort to explore post-secondary education in Maine, the North American Championships in Fort Kent, Maine. There, under the guidance of German born British Columbia High Performance Team coach Ilmar Heinicke, he decided to make the move to Prince George, British Columbia.

His international career began under the guidance of Heinicke in Prince George. While training and competing full-time he attended the University of Northern British Columbia from September 2007 to April 2008. It was under Heinicke and with teammates Matt Neumann, Nils Erasmus, Gillian Warner, Megan Tandy, Jessica Sedlock and Katja Zubkova that he developed into a high performance, national team level athlete. That season he competed at the newly completed 2010 Olympic venue, Whistler Olympic Park as well as in Canmore (Alberta), West Yellowstone (Montana), Mittenwald (Germany), Pokjulka (Slovenia) and St. Moritz (Switzerland). As in 2007 he capped off the season with a personal best 4th place finish at Canadian National Championships. For the 2008-09 season, the British Columbia High Performance Team made the move to Squamish, British Columbia to take advantage of the nearby, world-class, Whistler Olympic Park training facility. For personal, non-sport related, reason and the lack of post-secondary institution in the Squamish area Alexandre decided to return to his home province on Ontario to pursue his athletic and academic goals.

His performances at the 2008 North American Summer Championships in Canmore, Alberta resulted in his nomination to the national team that would represent Canada at the 2009 World University Games (Winter Universiade) in Harbin, China.
