Akahi Nui
James Kimo Akahi, aka Akahi Nui (claims birth on Maui, 1941-02-19) is a disputed pretender to The Throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii. His claim to the throne is supported by at least one Hawaiian sovereignty group.
Akahi Nui was "coronated" on 22 February 1998 at Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawaii. He claims to have been recognized by the United Nations, to have made treaties with foreign nations (notably excluding the United States), and to have represented Hawaii on visits to European royal families. He claims to travel internationally on a Kingdom of Hawaii passport.
Akahi Nui's claim to the throne is controversial among the Hawaiian sovereignty community, with at least one sovereignty group filing a mock cease and desist order in the Hawaii Bureau of Conveyances and presenting it to Akahi Nui, saying that he has "no right, authority or power to act in the name of the Kingdom of Hawaii or its government".
Akahi Nui claims to be directly descended from King Kamehameha I, the first Hawaiian king, and Queen Liliuokalani's sister.
On March 29, 2001 Judge Shackley F. Raffetto of the 2nd Circuit Court on Maui sentenced James Kimo Akahi to a five year prison term after he was convicted of criminal trespass in the second degree.
