Aika Miura

is a popular and award-winning Japanese AV idol who made a clear mark on the AV industry. In a remarkably long and prolific career for an AV actress, she released an average of one film a month over a seven year period-- excepting 1998-- before she retired in 2002.

Life and career

Early life

Aika's birth name is . She was born to a conservative family in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan on November 2, 1975. Though her family did not approve of her working in the AV industry, they remained close to her throughout her career. When her father once scolded her for making money from pleasure, Miura pointed out that some of her performances involved bondage and S&M, and observed, "It's not as fun as you think!"

Debut and early career

Miura made her AV debut on KUKI's Tank label in the March 1995 release I Love You, Summer Memory (September 1995) was in the popular but controversial exhibitionistic genre of Japanese adult video which would later earn AV actress Asuka Yuki an arrest a decade later. In Miura's video all the [...] scenes were filmed outside, including at a beach.

In Costume Doll (October 1995), Miura entered the cosplay genre. Among the costumes she wore in this video were those of a nurse, a bride, a high school girl, and a pizza delivery girl. Setting off on a Trip (November 1995) had Miura in the role of a young woman who travels to Fukuoka to meet a famous artist, only to discover that the man is a lecherous old pervert.

Her December 1995 video, Fantasy, won an award from Video Boy magazine. Wet & Deep Love, released January 1996, had Miura working in the popular [...] and S&M genres of Japanese [...].

Short retirement and return

With Countdown, from February 1996, Miura announced the first of her temporary retirements, which would last only until May. During this break, Kuki released Aika Miura Maniac (April 1996), a collection of never-before-seen scenes from previous videos. In May 1996, Miura returned and adopted the single-name "AIKA", all in Roman-alphabet capitals, as her stage name. Poison (June 1996) had Miura shedding the somewhat innocent personona she had cultivated until then by introducing scenes of anal [...].

Kjell Fornander describes the trajectory that Miura's career had assumed at this point. He says, "Viewers are invited to follow, from appearance to appearance, her [...] initiation, dawning self-awareness and gradual acceptance of her inner, dark depths." 1000 Carat, released in July 1996, continued this exploration of more adventurous and extreme themes. In this video, Miura takes the dominant role in the [...] scenes in this [...] drama in which she plays a challenging and serious role. AIKA Freak, released the following month, included scenes of outdoor group [...].

In October of 1996, Miura appeared in the 26th entry in the Atlas label's popular and long-running NEO Bloody Uniform series of cosplay-themed videos. At Atlas, Miura made a three-year career retrospective video entitled Legend Of An AV Idol.

Alice Japan's Inhumanity (December 1997), had Miura in the role of a newlywed bride who suffers from amnesia after being hit by a car. Nine different men claim to be her husband, and she must perform fellatio on each one to find out who the real groom is. They all turn out to be imposters when the real husband shows up and the video concludes with Miura engaging in [...] with him.

With The Last Video -Aika Miura-, the actress again took a break from appearing in AVs. Though she would continue pursuing her career as a stripper, this vacation from the AV industry would last from January until November of 1998.

Final come-back and retirement

Though she had repeatedly retired and come back, after five years Miura still had a strong following. In 2000 Kuki released several DVD collections of her previous videos for her fan-base. In 2001, six years after her debut, she starred in the theatrically-released, widescreen film Aika Miura - Streetcar [...] (三浦あいか　痴漢電車エクスタシー). Miura retired from AVs the following year. Even in retirement, Miura remained popular enough to warrant further DVD compilation releases, and five years after her final retirement a semi-documentary video featuring scenes from throughout her career, was relased in May 2007.
