Ahvaz derby goes back to the 1990s, when [[Esteghlal Ahvaz F.C.]] and [[Foolad F.C.]] faced each other in [[Azadegan League 1997–98]].<ref>http://www.rsssf.com/tablesi/iran98.html</ref> They did not meet again until [[October 18]], [[2002]], and the derby became a regular fixture until 2010, apart from one season when they didn't face each other.
