After the Astronaut
After the Astronaut was set to be the Eighth studio album by the Butthole Surfers, and it was supposed to be released in 1998 (see 1998 in music). After a release date was set, critics were sent advance copies of the album to listen to. Some thought it was Horrible, which caused the album not to be released. Since advance copies were sent to critics and possibly others, the album has been leaked online. Most of the copies found online are said to be sourced from a cassette copy of the album. The bulk of the tracks on the album were re-worked and put on the band's official eighth album, Weird Revolution.
A minor controversy came to light when the band Marcy Playground released their Shapeshifter album, the artwork for which was taken from the aborted After the Astronaut. Paul Leary revealed on band Marcy Playground's BBS that the cover art for Shapeshifter had originally been conceptualized and commissioned by Leary for his band's aborted album. He admitted to being a fan of Marcy Playground, but accused the band of an apparent lack of imagination and originality. Leary's outrage was eased once he learned that Capitol Records, former home of the Butthole Surfers and then-current home of Marcy Playground, had pitched the artwork to Marcy Playground's Wozniak as original work from their own art department and that Marcy Playground had no knowledge of the work's origins. Upon learning the truth, Wozniak proclaimed that he was "honored" to have an album cover designed by Paul Leary. There were apparently no bad feelings between the bands once the controversy had been cleared up.
