African Students' Association

The African Students' Association or organization or Union is an organization, operate by students at a university, whose membership normally consists blacks or students of African descent or origin. They are often affiliated with a university's students' union or operate independently. African Student Association often aims to facilitate a particular activity or promote a belief system . Most times, the organization undertake various activities including academic oriented and cultural events with the goal of promoting awareness of the rich African cultural heritage and her values.

Goal

  • To promote unity and diversity among Africans and other students,
  • To look after the welfare of the members
  • To promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the African people
  • To facilitate cooperation and support for others and for the advancement of education.
  • To help rid misconceptions on/AbOUT Africa
  • To promote a greater understanding of African traditions and increase unity among students attending University regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.
  • To encourage and support cultural, academic, social and athletic activities at the University.
  • To stimulate interaction among African students and the society at large.
  • To welcome and assist incoming African students to the university in cooperation with the Office of International Students Services.

Structure

The organization usually has a working constitution that entails the administrative and operative principle and guideline. The administrative framework of the organization usually includes but not limited to the following:

  • President: oversee the activities and decision making in the association
  • Vice President: Usually support the president or assume the duties of president if need be
  • Secretary: keep records of all proceedings of the Association’s Executive Committee and General Assembly meetings.
  • Treasurer: keep record of all financial transactions of the Association and make all duly authorized payment
  • Public relations Officer: organize and implement publicity work for the various ASA sponsored activities and programs in cooperation with the Executive Committee.

Activities

The African students Association as a socio-cultural organization do organize cultural events to showcase the exotic heritage of African culture. However, in the past, these kind of organization have organized political driven events like the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) a student body that resisted apartheid through political action. The organization was formed in 1968, spearheaded by Steve Biko, and played a major role in the Black Consciousness Movement. They can also organize convention to discuss issues related to the growth of their countries like the African convention 2005 held in Kuching, Sarawak Malaysia spearheaded by Onwutalobi Anthony-Claret.

These organization have also mobilize forces in the past to fight against injustice or crime melted to students either because of race, gender or [...] orientation.
