Adria (band)
Adria is a 3 piece rock/ post-hardcore band based in Southern New Hampshire. Formed in November 2002, the band is comprised of Matt Cartmill, Sean Joncas, and Justin Pill.
Sound & Influences
All three members originate from widely varied backgrounds musically in both training and listening preferences. The group commonly blends hook-heavy songwriting with metal and punk influences. Much of the band's sound is based around dissonant chording with ambient texturing.
The band cites a wide range of musical influences, most prominently citing 90's rock band Nirvana, along with space rockers Hum, Glassjaw, and Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Ros. Though compared to numerous emocore bands, the band's sound is skewed more towards a self-described heavy rock/ indie rock hybrid.
Early years
Adria formed in New London, NH where all three members were attending Colby-Sawyer College at the time. Joncas (guitar, vocals) hounded Cartmill (drums, vocals) to consider playing together for several months after walking by the drummer's apartment where he was playing along with a Strung Out CD. The band played its first proper gig in April 2003. Spending much of the first year developing their sound, Adria recorded an 8 song demo in November 2003 in Haverhill, MA.
Shortly after, the band began playing throughout the New England area, working on building a foothold in the local music scene for much of 2004.
2005 - 2007
After recording 4 songs for a forthcoming EP, Adria signed to Seacoast NH area indie label Red Fez Records in March 2005, who issued the debut EP Concealer a month later. The band gigged heavily in support of EP during the first half of 2005 and continued to keep a busy live itinerary for over a year.
In July 2006, the trio entered Dizzyland Recording in Rochester, NH to record what would become the group's first proper full length The View From Here. Sessions stretched out over the latter half of the year. The album depicts a time of growth for the band, displaying the more straightforwardness of the band's earlier material to the more intricate song arrangements and ambient guitar TEXtures heard prominently in the band's sound today. Released in April 2007, the album caught the attention of fans and Northeast-area media and radio alike, with single "Jesus Chrysler" receiving airplay on numerous mainstream stations including WBCN and WFNX. The band went on its first tour outside of New England in June '07, visiting locations down the east coast including NYC, PA, and NJ.
2008 and Beyond
The band has written new material to be recorded this winter. The songs are slated to be released on a split CD with former tourmates The Hate Game due out in Spring 2008. The band is also planning to tour immediately following the release.
