Absolom Jones

Soul/funk legend Absolom “Snowball” Jones was born in Pig Bend County, Georgia in 1934. His father was a crocodile fisherman and his mother “Lozenge” was a fisherman’s friend. Vey little is known of his juvenile years, and Jones himself is notoriously vague about them. He seems to have left the family home—a place he once described in an interview in the New Musical Express as a “pigstye”—at fourteen and travelled North in the company of itinerant blues man Joe “the Hog” Roast.

   The first verifiable biographical data regarding Jones appears on a list of contract artists signed to the impresario and bacon magnate Magnus Schinkenraucher. In that document he is described simply as “rythmn” and it appears that he was a sort of jack-of-all INSTRUMENTS playing drums, bass, guitars and simple piano as required.
   Snowball’s big break came in 1956 when he was recruited by Pete “the Porker” McManus to join his band “The Maryland Trotters”—a sort of avant garde Minstrel show specializing in pioneering early jazz/funk versions of Al Jolson standards and Scott Joplin classics. Snowball quickly began to headline alongside the star musicians in the band—“Pinkie” White (saxophone), George “Red” Tamworth (piano), and “Burmese” Don Cochon (glockenspiel and washboard). His two fingered style of electric bass has been described by afficianados as the bedrock of funk and the heart of soul. Snowball’s unique playing—christened “ham-fisting” by his band colleagues—can be heard to stunning effect in the live recording of his own composition, “Momma don’t fry my chitterlings (in another man’s bacon grease).” 
   Tragedy struck Snowball’s life in 1963 when he lost the use of his legs in a pig-related accident—the details of which are still unclear. Confinement to a wheelchair led to the curtailment of his stage career and he turned his prodigious talent to studio production. Latterly he has enjoyed in popularity as a performer since being taken up Jools Holland on whose television show “Later With . . .” he is a frequent guest. Snowball’s first solo album in over two decades, Soul Oinkment,  reached number 2 in the American billboard charts in January 2010.
