5by5 Studios
5by5 Studios is an American Internet broadcasting network created by Dan Benjamin that creates, distributes, and broadcasts web video interviews and podcasts. 5by5 has been called "NPR for geeks", as the broadcasts discuss technology and internet culture and are targeted towards developers, designers and technology enthusiasts.
There are currently 20 broadcasts that are downloaded over 300,000 times a week. The format for most of the shows is Benjamin and a co-host discussing topics live with an IRC audience, who often provide feedback, ask questions, and are often quoted during the show.
Production
Benjamin built a home recording studio in his house in Florida and uses a Heil PR 40 dynamic mic, Joe Meek ThreeQ pre-amp, and a Mackie Onyx 1620i firewire mixer. He uses Logic Studio for multitrack recording and Telestream’s Wirecast to live-stream both the audio and video. Video interviews are recorded using a Skype video conference and screen capture software, with each guest on a dedicated Mac Mini. Benjamin edits and produces all but a few of the broadcasts.
The shows are broadcast live using justin.tv. Video interviews are recorded using a Skype video connection and screen capture software.
Awards
5by5's The Big Web Show, co-hosted by Jeffrey Zeldman, won three .net Magazine awards in November 2010.
