2026-2029 Bangladesh local elections

Local elections in Bangladesh are expected to start in September/October of 2026. According to the state minister for the LGRD ministry, Mir Shahe Alam told the press that after the current monsoon season, in the upcoming September or October, the local elections will be held gradually. He stated that elections for five types of local government, union councils, municipal corporations, Upazila councils, district councils, and city corporations will be complete within one year.

Background

After the fall of the Awami League government in a popular mass uprising in 2024, most of the local government offices were dissolved. The vacant positions were filled with government-appointed administrators. Political parties like Jamaat and NCP demanded local government elections to be held before national elections. But due to opposition from the BNP, elections were not held before the 2026 Bangladeshi general election. After the election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party formed a government with a supermajority and promised to hold local body elections as soon as possible. In total, 4,599 union councils, 329 municipal corporations, 500 upazillas, 61 district councils and 13 city corporation elections are to be held.
