2016–17 Santiago South Second Division
The 2016–17 Santiago South Second Division season was the 13th of the competition of the third-tier level of the football that took place in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on November 19 and ended on April 9. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS). AD Ribeira Grande won their second title and will be promoted to the Premier Division for the following season alongside runner-up Varanda, the latter to return after just a season spent in the division. The scheduling were made in September.
Overview
Two new clubs appeared, Relâmpago (Portuguese for lightning) and Tira Chapéu based in the neighborhood in the west of the city. The season once again featured 10 clubs with the addition of the new clubs. Uncertain that additional clubs will be added for the following season, and uncertain what the Second Division will be for the following season.
At the 17th round. Ribeira Grande de Santiago, based in Cape Verde's oldest city Cidade Velha became Second Division champions and got their return to the Premier Division entry after five seasons. Second was Varanda and third was Tira Chapéu, a new club who spent its first season in the Second Division. Varanda was originally to compete in the Second Division again, before November 2017, the club withdrew and TIra Chapéu replaced Varanda, the club competed for the first time into the Premier Division in the following season while Varanda was kept as a Second Division club for the following season and is not competing.
Both Delta and Varanda were relegated last season after finishing in the last two positions.
The later part of the season was led by Ribeira Grande. Kumunidade (also as Kumunidadi) finished last place.
