On January 21, 2026, a five-alarm fire broke out at a U-Haul storage facility on 1500 S. 1st St, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The initial 911 call was made at 6:30 PM. 11 crews of the Milwaukee Fire Department were sent to the scene, and a total of 37 crews, some outside the county, responded to the fire. The extreme cold made it hard to put out the fire, and void spaces "also played a role in the difficulty".

On January 18, 2026, in Elektrostal, Russia, an argument on a bus escalated into a fatal stabbing at a bus stop. 19-year-old Imomali Turdiev intervened when a group of young men harassed a woman. The conflict continued outside, where Turdiev stabbed 18-year-old Ilya Polezhaev multiple times in the neck and torso. Polezhaev died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.
