Early life
Stolcke obtained his PhD in computer science in 1994 from University of California, Berkeley and at the same time was both doctoral research and a short-time postdoc at the International Computer Science Institute. Before working for Microsoft he was a senior research engineer at SRI International in Menlo Park, California. He was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Audio Speech and Language Processing as well as co-author of Computer Speech and Language. He is a fellow of both ISCA and IEEE and is currently writes articles regarding language and speaker modeling as well as speech understanding.
Research
In 1994 he used Hidden Markov models and stochastic context-free grammar to develop a Bayesian network which was a part of his dissertation.
In 2002 he developed SRILM, a program based on C++ libraries, executables and helper scripts. In September of the same year he discovered that by using prosodic model it is possible to predict whether an utterance is neutral or is annoying and/or frustrating to people.

It not just carries tourist and passenger traffic but carries primarily agricultural goods mainly to other parts of the island such as Chã das Caldeiras wine and other fruits. The northernmost portion was devastated by the recent eruption in November and December 2014, it was also partly devastated near Chã das Caldeiras during the April 1995 eruption. The national route is being the highest in Cape Verde running at about 1,600 meters elevation, other routes running at higher elevations in the nation are Porto Novo-Tarrafal de Monte Trigo Road and Estrada da Corda (Porto Novo-Corda-Ribeira Grande), both located on the island of Santo Antão. The route starts at Fonte Aleixo and finishes at Bangaeira in Chã das Caldeiras. Its total length is 25 km, before the 2014-15 eruption, it was 19.8 km long.
