Baya Michaelson (born Michael E. Clay, 1974 California) is an American singer-songwriter in the neo-digital genre. He works from EDH Studios in Big Sur and El Dorado Hills, California. Baya Michaelson was well received in the early 2000s in San Francisco and again in the Shiba District of Tokyo. Michaelson is now in studio recording tracks for the new album L1 and is expected to announce tour dates this August 2010.
Biography
Baya Michaelson is native Californian. Born in 1974, Baya was raised and schooled in the Big Sur/Monterey area. At the age of 2, Baya was playing Suzuki Violin. By the age of 4 he was playing the piano in classical fashion and had already written 2 concertos. By the age of 9, Baya had developed into an Alto Saxophone player which he continued for many years. Young Baya then, was playing for the Middle School Jazz Band while training as a distance runner for the High School Track Team and Surfing in big waves of the stormy, jagged, California coast. To this day, Baya claims that his times spent in “Large Water” has developed him into the performer we know, more so than “any education on land”. Before High School, Baya studied summers at Robert Louis Stevenson School for Music. By the age of 14, Baya had performed in Jazz clubs with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Soder and Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s Drummer). Though not keen on Jazz, in 1987 Baya left the Saxophone and turned to computers as a viable option for creating new musics. There is no record on file for the next decade.
"I always tended towards the computers." Baya states in an early 2001 interview. "Though relatively new in their evolution, they have progressed enough to trigger Synthesizers and Sound Canvases. Not to mention they never showed up to a gig drunk, so that is good. If programmed properly, they don’t make mistakes and can bring everything any musician can to the table. Have you ever tried to program a human bass player? It simply doesn’t work. They bite."
