The Southam Chambers was a six-storey office tower located at 206 7th Avenue South West in Calgary, Alberta. Designed by Montreal architectural firm Brown and Vallence and built between 1912 and 1913, the Southam Chambers was one of Calgary's earliest examples of modern architecture. Between 1932 and 1981 the Chambers was the main office for the Calgary Herald, during which time it was also known as the "Herald Building." The Southam Chambers was demolished in 2013.
The Southam Chambers was one of two buildings at the intersection of 1st Street West and 7th Avenue South built contemporaneously by the Southam Company, the other being the Southam Building.
History and Design
Built between 1912 and 1913, the Southam Chambers originally housed a furniture store, and later, various other retail. Between 1925 and 1931 the building served as a temporary "Public Building" and was occupied by government offices and a post office. In 1932 the Calgary Daily Herald moved out of the Southam Building and set up office in the Chambers. It remained there until 1981.
In 1967 a marble cladding was added to the building, covering all of the original exterior. A walkway was also built out of the north end to the Herald's printing plant located behind it on 6th Avenue.
In January 2013 the Southam Chambers was demolished.

With Lisa Roth, she is the author of "Stand Up," a children's book that acquaints children with the perniciousness of bullying and offers those "bystanding" children, who watch and do nothing to stop the bullying, strategies to stop the unkindness by "standing up" for their peers, as the title suggests. She presents workshops to teachers, administrators and concerned parents across the country about bullying prevention and intervention.
Following New York's 2012 enactment of the "Dignity for All Students Act," she was appointed by School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) to represent them on the New York State Task force for implementation of the law, and now serves on the New York State Safe Schools Task Force.
Born in Port Washington, NY, she graduated from Schreiber High School in 1968, obtained her undergraduate degree at Boston University, her MA in Literacy from New York University and her Ed.D in Educational Leadership at Hofstra University. Her doctoral thesis, "Using Action Research to Alleviate Bullying,", received the H. Alan Robinson Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award and became the springboard for her work on ways to combat bullying. In addition, she is the author of various other publications, most of which concern effective bullying prevention and intervention. She lives in Roslyn, New York and is married to the attorney Michael Siris.
