The iSixes World Series is a new circuit of four elite six-a-side cricket tournaments to be held in leading Asian cities.
It was launched in Singapore on May 8 and will feature some of the biggest names in world cricket, ensuring action-packed events delivering maximum spectator entertainment. The iSixes is a dynamic, youthful and innovative entertainment concept with global appeal and already Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Craig McMillan and Heath Streak have signed up.
The iSixes will commence in Singapore from July 4-6, an event that will be joined by three further events over the next 9 months. Dubai and Shanghai are being investigated as two of the potential hosts by series promoters Zero Friction.
The series will conclude with a final for the leading six teams only in the first quarter of 2009. The team that wins the iSixes final will claim US$1 million.
Sixes is one of the shortest and most dynamic forms of the game played internationally, featuring six-player teams rather than the traditional 11. With only six fielders (five fewer than other forms of cricket), runs are scored quickly in Sixes cricket - with a premium on fast and furious entertainment and a party atmosphere.
Each member of the fielding team except for the wicketkeeper bowls one over of six deliveries for a total innings length of only five overs. Each match lasts approximately 45 minutes each and 10-12 games can be played in a day.
By comparison, Twenty20 cricket matches have 20 overs per team for a total of 40 overs and take approximately three hours to play.
Sixes cricket arrived on the world stage in 1992 when the first Hong Kong Cricket Sixes was played. Over the years, the Hong Kong event has attracted a veritable Who's Who of world cricket, including stars such as Brian Lara, Viv Richards, Andrew Flintoff, Sachin Tendulkar, the Waugh brothers (Steve and Mark), Adam Gilchrist, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Wasim Akram. The annual ICC-sanctioned tournament is held at the Kowloon Cricket Club and in 2008 will take place from November 8-9.
