Leejay Abucayan is a distinguished beatbox champion and has been loving the art of beatboxing for years. Leejay currently resides in Sacramento, CA. Career
When Leejay first heard Rahzel the "Godfather of Noyze," he sparked an interest in beatboxing. In 2001 at the Philippine Fiesta in Sacramento, his girlfriend introduced Leejay to her friend Kevin Discipulo, who was also interested in beatboxing. Kevin gave Leejay a sample and from then on Leejay was inspired to try it himself. Kevin showed Leejay that real life people can beatbox, too not just famous musicians. He began practicing and intensely immersed himself in online forums and beatboxing sites. Leejay utilized his community connections as well as his family in getting gigs around the Sacramento area which also expanded to the bay and Southern California. His first performance was at FA SHOW (Filipino-American Show) put on my PYC Sacramento and Jason Magsuci. Being his own boss, he researched the history and technique. While beatboxing was always an interest to Leejay he never let it take over his life. He kept his focus in school, friends, family, community and work while doing performances on the side. Leejay brought his talents to the public when he designed and published his own website. Not only did he post clips of his performances but also acquired an interest in comedic short films and also experimental audio. Michael "Fii" Krappel, Coordinator of the First Austrian Beatbox Championship heard the clips and was so impressed by his ability that he personally invited Leejay to share his talent at the competition in Vienna, Austria. He flew back home to Sacramento as the Austrian Beatbox Champion of 2003. While Leejay has had many accomplishments and achievements in the beatboxing industry, he keeps humble. He always gives credit where due and never considers himself to be famous or the best. He recognizes the talents of everyone and considers himself lucky to be recognized. Leejay is also talented in many other areas and aspires to be a graphic designer. He performs for the upliftment of his Fil-Am and hip hop community and hopes that others can use beatboxing as an artistic outlet to express themselves.
