CrystalMUSH is an online role-playing game which is based on Crystal Singer trilogy.
Overview
CrystalMUSH's roleplay revolves around the planet Ballybran, set several hundred years after the last book of the trilogy, Crystal Line, but without incorporating the changes made in that book. Ballybran is the home to the Heptite Guild, which mines crystals used by many industries around the galaxy. This mining can only be done by individuals with perfect and absolute pitch, who are paid very handsomely for their trouble. Unfortunately, once an individual moves to Ballybran, they are bound to live out their lives there unless they become a Crystal Singer, and even the Singers must return periodically or die.
Players on this game may take on one of many roles within the Heptite Guild, and participate in both roleplay and coded activities related to their role. The game includes a coded economy and a three-dimensional (although torus-shaped) world grid to traverse by airborne vehicle.
History
CrystalMUSH was originally created in 1992 by Carol Gaupp ("Brandy") with the assistance of Andrew Molitor ("Kelson"). It is distinctive among McCaffrey-themed MU*s for its frequent use of coded systems, many of which were created by its earliest players and staff members. The game is perhaps best known outside its own player base for being the origin of BrandyMail, a coded mail system which was used extensively in early MUSH-type games. BrandyMail's interface is echoed in the @mail systems of TinyMUSH and TinyMUX today.

There has long been a tradition of sub-dividing history by country. This is closely linked to the central focus on political leadership by historians. It has increasingly come to be realized that historical trends and patterns are not confined within borders, thus looking at the history of larger and smaller regions, that are often more vaguely defined, but can be looked at as a single group.
