Richard Ormonde Plater (September 6, 1933 - August 6, 2016) was a notable Episcopal Church author who influenced North American and broader Anglophone practices around the Christian diaconate. He was born in New York City and attended Vanderbilt University (BA, 1955) and Tulane University (M.A. 1965, Ph.D. 1969). Before ordination to the diaconate in 1971, he worked as a reporter for the Albany Knickerbocker News. In 1998 Bishop Charles Jenkins of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana made Plater archdeacon of the diocese.
Plater was an early member of the North American Association for the Diaconate (NAAD), now called the Association for Episcopal Deacons. Plater edited the NAAD periodical Diakoneo from 1985 to 1995. He was a member of the Anglican-Lutheran Consultation on the Diaconate that produced the 1995 Anglican-Lutheran International Commission Hanover Report: The Diaconate as Ecumenical Opportunity.
He was noted as having "faithfully served the Church in many capacities, including prison and hospital ministry, as well as the education and formation of deacons." Plater was a tenth-generation descendant of George Washington.
NBS 24/7 is a television program produced by Kestrel Communications on Speed Channel. Every Monday, the show profiled some of the crews and drivers of NASCAR's Busch Series. Each 30-minute episode gave a look, not just at those profiled during races, but behind-the-scenes as well. Two of the many drivers looked at on the show include Casey Atwood and David Stremme. The show premiered in February 2004, and was a replacement for the failed Inside NBS, which was cancelled after just one season.
NASCAR Beyond the Wheel is a documentary program that aired on Speed Channel in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
The program was produced by NASCAR Images and mixed film footage, audio from the Fox/FX and NBC/TNT telecasts and the radio broadcasts from Motor Racing Network, Performance Racing Network, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. In addition, a key driver and/or crew chief was interviewed each week. Late in the show's run, the driver interview was almost always with the race winner.
George Lee was the narrator in 2005 and the start of 2006, but Lee died in 2006. Jim Birdsall, who has also been heard on NFL Films, took over during the 2006 season.
NASCAR Beyond the Wheel, as well as 7 Days, were cancelled by Speed Channel after the 2006 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. (Another related show on the network, NBS 24/7, had been canned in June.)
On April 30, 2007, NASCAR Beyond the Wheel won the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Event Turnaround program.
