Mind - The Final Frontier is a book written by Indian author Ravi Singh published in 2016. It explains how the human mind works using the information processing approach. By combining the methods of Indian and Western philosophy it throws light on questions such as ‘Who am I’, ‘What’s the purpose of my life’, ‘Why do I dislike my job’ and ‘How can I improve my personal relationships’.
<big>About the Author</big>
Ravi Singh is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who takes a keen interest in philosophy. Before joining the civil services, he has worked in consulting roles with EY and KPMG. A TED speaker and a sports enthusiast, he also practices the Japanese martial arts Aikido.
<big>Content</big>
The book is divided into three parts. The first part of the book establishes a basic framework of the mind based on some assumptions. Some readers might find this part a little technical in nature, but the author has tried to make it as simple as possible by using examples. Based on this framework, he has tried to explain ideas like self, consciousness, free will, conflict, expectations, etc. It is written from a philosophical perspective. The following parts are nothing but a logical extension and corollary of the basic framework.
In the second part, the author deliberately enters the speculative realm and tries to answer questions related to the nature of reality, God, love, etc. The reader must also exercise her/his own intelligence before coming to a conclusion.
In the third part of the book, the author comes back from the realm of speculation to the realm of practical life and discusses issues that concern our daily lives like relationships and job satisfaction. Parts two and three are based on the framework established in part one.
The author believes that it is vital for people across the world today, both young and old, to understand the functioning of the human mind. Thanks to the scientific innovations in the past few decades, today, the majority of the human population on the globe can fulfill their basic needs like food, clothing and shelter. But this has not necessarily resulted in more happiness and prosperity which has led us to question the idea of material prosperity. There is no denying that material prosperity is a necessary condition for happiness but it may not be sufficient. The author himself has witnessed colleagues and co-workers facing this question in a variety of professional settings. The book explores the various ideas pertaining to the human condition and tries to answer how can a person better deal with them and lead a more fulfilling life.
