Joaquim Varela (born 1 June 1915) is a Portuguese supercentenarian who is currently the oldest known living man and person in Portugal. He is also among the top 10 oldest living men.
Biography
Joaquim Varela was registered in Ourique, Beja District, Portugal on June 1, 1915, however, it is likely that he was actually born in May 13, 1915. his parents were unable to travel the distance quickly enough to have him registered within the correct period, so to avoid a fine, they told the registry that he was born on June 1. His parents were Amadeu Guerreiro and Maria Antonia. In 1940, Varela married Augusta Varela (born Augusta Perreira). The couple had 6 children (4 daughters and 2 sons). His wife died in 1993 at age 77. After his wife's death, he moved to his daughter's house. As of his 105th birthday in 2020, Varela had 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Varela became the oldest living man in Portugal following the death of 108-year-old Manuel Ferreira on 21 September 2022. Nearly 4 years later, on 22 August 2026, Varela became the oldest living person in Portugal following the death of 113-year-old Maria da Conceição Brito.
