Wendy Wax is an American author who has written over a dozen works of fiction since her first novel 7 Days and 7 Nights was published in 2003. Her most notable works include her Ten Beach Road series and While We Were Watching Downton Abbey.
Early life
Wax was born in St. Petersburg, Florida and grew up on St. Pete Beach just a short distance away from the Gulf of Mexico. She attended Sunshine Elementary School and participated in recess and art classes that often took place on the beach. Wax drew inspiration from some of her favorite Florida beaches for her fiction, including the Ten Beach Road series. After attending Sunshine Elementary School, Wax studied at Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. From there she attended The University of Georgia, Florida State University (where she participated in a study abroad program in Florence, Italy), and The University of South Florida where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1977.
Career
Before embarking on her career as an author, Wax worked in radio, television and film, and as a writer, producer and host of The Home Front, which aired on PBS affiliate stations across the country in the late 1980s. She also worked as the host of a Friday night radio show called Desperate and Dateless between 1983 and 1984. Wax has been writing since the mid-1990s when she was a mother to a newborn son. Her first novel 7 Days and 7 Nights was published in 2003 by Bantam, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Since then, she has written 12 other novels and a novella. Her works cover topics such as friendship, loyalty, love and self-discovery.
Reception
Critics have praised Wax's work. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called her novel While We Were Watching Downton Abbey "irresistible". Her books have been featured in national publications such as USA Today, Ladies Home Journal, CNN Online and Woman’s World, and at online book sites such as On a Clear Day I Can Read Forever, Luxury Reading, Book Reporter, Night Owl Reviews and Fresh Fiction. In 2011 she was honored by the City of St. Pete Beach when the City Commission declared May 12 “Wendy Wax Day.” Additionally, her novels have been positively reviewed by USA Today and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In a review on her book While We Were Watching Downton Abbey, USA Today reporter Craig Wilson wrote, "What do you get when you mix one dashing British concierge with three lonely women from diverse backgrounds, set them all in a historic apartment building in Midtown Atlanta, then turn on the television? What you get, actually, is quite a clever, fun little novel." While We Were Watching Downton Abbey was also positively reviewed by Jane Krebs of BookReporter.com. She writes, "Honesty in any relationship is vital, and Wax shows this truth in downtown Atlanta alongside the engrossing story of Downton Abbey.".
Personal life
When not writing, Wax visits with readers at bookstores and book events, reads, enjoys her and her husband’s newly empty nest, and catches up with her two sons. She currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
